Water & Wastewater Rate Study – 2024

Did you know the City of Waverly participates in a water and wastewater rate study every five years? It is crucial for cities to conduct water and sewer rate studies every five years to ensure that the rates charged to residents are fair, equitable, and sufficient to cover the costs of maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure. Over time, factors such as inflation, population growth, changes in water usage patterns, and the aging of infrastructure can significantly impact the costs associated with water and sewer services. Regular rate studies allow cities to adjust their pricing structures to reflect these changes, ensuring that the utility remains financially sustainable and that the services provided are reliable and of high quality. Additionally, these studies help prevent sudden, steep rate increases by enabling gradual adjustments, which are easier for residents to absorb. By regularly reviewing and updating water and sewer rates, cities can better plan for future needs, avoid financial shortfalls, and ensure the long-term sustainability of their water and sewer systems.

On Tuesday, September 10th, JEO, the firm we hired to conduct these studies, will present its findings to the mayor and city council. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend this important presentation. Following the presentation, there will be a public hearing where you can ask questions and provide input. By attending these hearings, you are not only exercising your civic rights but also contributing to the spread of accurate information throughout our community.

Each year, the City of Lincoln publishes a brochure that provides a comparison of local and regional water and sewer rates. I strongly encourage everyone to review this valuable information. The 2023 local rates reveal that Waverly has the lowest water rates per unit and ranks in the middle for wastewater rates.

The proposed rates were discussed at the city council meeting earlier this week. As always, you can view all council meeting agendas and related documents at your convenience.
