I am thrilled to announce that the City of Waverly is no longer in a water emergency, effective immediately. Waverly worked with Olsson Associates to make recommendations and subsequent changes to our municipal code regarding ordinance 51.37 which deals with water watches, warnings and emergencies. This code had not been updated since the mid 90s. The ordinance amending these triggers and measures was passed unanimously on January 9, 2024.
As of February 15, 2024, the US Drought Monitor from UNL currently has us at a ‘moderate drought’. You can view these maps yourself here. With that in mind, I urge citizens to continue water conservation measures. Water is a fragile resource and we must act as such.
The city continues to look for additional sources of water and projects we can implement to ensure sustainability for the future of our community and all of our residents. These projects include, but are not limited to, water distribution study, hydrogeological analyses, well siting studies and well rehabilitations. You will always receive the most current information by visiting the city’s website here. I am confident with our Public Works Director, his staff and the collaboration with the engineers and hydrologists, Waverly is on the right track to find long term solutions to increase the resiliency of our water system.
