WAVERLY, Neb (The Waverly News) – The first name has been thrown into the hat in the race that will decide Waverly’s next mayor.

Abbey Pascoe of Waverly announced on Jan. 25 her intention to run for mayor and fill the seat that will be left by current Mayor Bill Gerdes, who has stated he will not run for reelection.

Pascoe has served as a Waverly City Council member since Gerdes nominated her in 2020 to fill his seat when he became mayor. She has been the council president for just over a year and represents Ward 2, defined roughly as Waverly south of U.S. 6 and Heywood Street.

“I want to run for mayor because I believe that this is an amazing community, and I believe that I can lead and prioritize the things that make Waverly so great,” Pascoe said in an interview.

Pascoe launched a campaign website last week, which lays out what her priorities would be if she is elected. Her top priority is public safety, and she said she supports efforts to build a new fire station for Waverly Fire and Rescue to replace the aging one that fire department volunteers have bemoaned for its difficult truck access points and lack of unused space.
